Need
for discussion is simply undebatable
Whatever happened to the time when we could
debate an issue passionately, then go out
for a beer? In fact, whatever happened to
open debates?
It seems we are ignoring diplomatic approaches
to open discussion in favor of the Alexander
Hamilton/Aaron Burr method of settling arguments:
Challenge your opposition to a duel and kill
him.
End of discussion. |
Our city council members
haven't quite reverted to dueling to end debate,
but they have taken to voting down discussions
before any lips move.
I don't understand the council's disdain for
exploring issues or problems and then hashing
out a direction to take.
Last week, the council, with a 13-2 vote,
basically said it didn't want to weigh the
pros and cons of having cameras installed
at traffic lights to help police catch and
ticket red-light runners. That's my take on
it, anyway. |
